Yobe Gov Emerges Lake Chad Basin Govs Forum Chairman, Promises To Unite Region

Yobe State governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, has been elected as the new chairman of the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum.

The election took place during the 5th edition of the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum, held in Maiduguri, Nigeria, from January 29-31, 2025.

In his acceptance speech, Governor Buni expressed his profound gratitude to his colleagues, delegates, and stakeholders for attending the Forum and contributing to its success.

He also thanked President Bola Tinubu for his leadership and commitment to peace, security, and development in the Lake Chad Basin region.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the Forum, which brought together State governors from Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria, aimed to promote regional cooperation on stabilisation, peacebuilding, and sustainable development.

The meeting themed “Rebuilding the Lake Chad Basin: Consolidating Gains, Commitment to Peace, Cross-Border Cooperation, Security, and Sustainable Development for a Resilient Community,” reflected the region’s determination to address its multifaceted challenges.

Buni pledged to serve with a great sense of responsibility and commitment, working closely with his colleagues and development partners to ensure the success of the Forum and the region’s development.

Governor Buni also commended the outgoing chairperson, Her Excellency Ildjima Abdraman, Governor of Hadjer Lamis Province of Chad, for her leadership.

According to her, the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum is a vital platform for regional cooperation, and Governor Buni’s election as new chairman marked a significant milestone in the region’s efforts to promote peace, security, and sustainable development.

She added that, “As the region looks forward to a more robust partnership and support, Governor Buni’s leadership is expected to play a crucial role in driving progress and prosperity in the Lake Chad Basin region.”
