Yobe Gov Emerges Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum Chairman

Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, has been elected as the new chairman of the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum.

The election occurred during the fifth edition of the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum held in Maiduguri, Borno State, from 29th to 31st January, 2025.

In his acceptance speech, Governor Buni expressed his gratitude to his colleagues, delegates, and stakeholders for attending the event and contributing to its success.

He also thanked President Bola Tinubu for his leadership and commitment to peace, security, and development in the Lake Chad Basin region.

LEADERSHIP Weekend gathered that the forum, which brought together state governors from Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria, aimed to promote regional cooperation on stabilisation, peacebuilding, and sustainable development.

The meeting, with the theme: “Rebuilding the Lake Chad Basin – Consolidating Gains, Commitment to Peace, Cross-Border Cooperation, Security, and Sustainable Development for a Resilient Community,” reflected the region’s determination to address its multifaceted challenges.

Buni pledged to serve with a strong sense of responsibility and commitment, working closely with his colleagues and development partners to ensure the success of the forum and the region’s development.

Governor Buni also commended the outgoing chairperson, Her Excellency Ildjima Abdraman, Governor of Hadjer Lamis Province in Chad, for her leadership.

She remarked that the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum is a vital platform for regional cooperation, and Governor Buni’s election as the new chairman marks a significant milestone in the region’s efforts to promote peace, security, and sustainable development.

She added, “As the region looks forward to a more robust partnership and support, Governor Buni’s leadership is expected to play a crucial role in driving progress and prosperity in the Lake Chad Basin region.”
