There is an ongoing protest by students from the University of Ibadan (UI) in Oyo State in response to the 82-day power outage at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan.
It is worth noting that the UCH serves as the teaching hospital for medical students from the University of Ibadan.
Reports, however, are that UCH has been facing a power outage for the past year, attributed to outstanding debts owed to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).
Henzodaily learnt that IBEDC severed the power supply to the hospital in March 2024 due to unpaid electricity bills.
Additionally, the electricity distribution company had previously disconnected the hospital’s power in November 2023 for similar reasons.
Reports indicate that the power supply has yet to be restored.
On Wednesday morning, students from the University of Ibadan held a peaceful protest to voice their concerns regarding the ongoing situation at the hospital.
Journalists observing the demonstration noted that the President of the Students’ Union, Bolaji Aweda, led the students.
Addressing reporters during the exercise, Aweda noted that the institution’s students have been significantly impacted by this issue.
“We are protesting against what is happening. And, of course, our students are affected.
“For 82 days, there has been no light at UCH, and this is due to the inability of UCH to pay its electricity bill to IBEDC.
“IBEDC has demanded that UCH settle its debt before they will restore power,” Aweda told Daily Post.
