UCL: Onyedika’s Goal Not Enough As Man City Beat Club Brugge To Reach Play-offs

Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika was on target for Club Brugge but it was not enough as the Belgian giants lost 3-1 to Manchester City on matchday 8 of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.

It was Onyedika’s first goal in this season’s competition.

City needed an outright win to avoid the embarrassment of crashing out in the group stage.

After a tough exchange Onyedika put Club Brugge 1-0 up in the 45th minute after slotting home a cutback cross.

In the 53rd minute Mateo Kovacic equalised for City before an own goal by Joel Ordonez put Pep Guardiola’s men 2-1 up on 62 minutes.

With 13 minutes left Savinho then added the third goal for the Premier League champions.

Both City (11 points) and Club Brugge (11 points) finished in 22nd and 24th position which was good enough for the play-offs for both teams.

In Germany Nathan Tella scored in Bayer Leverkusen’s 2-0 win against Sparta Prague.

With the victory Leverkusen finished in sixth place and automatically qualify for the round of 16.

Florian Wirtz broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute while Tella added the second goal on 64 minutes.

Atalanta, without Ademola Lookman battled Barcelona to a 2-2 draw in Spain.

The draw means Atalanta ended up in the play-offs while Barcelona had already secured automatic qualification into the first knockout round.
