Those With Capacity Will Take Over

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has threatened to sack underperforming committee chairmen.

Akpabio gave the warning on Tuesday during Plenary.

He was responding to concerns raised by Bauchi Central Senator, Abdul Ningi, who lamented that the Senate Committee on Finance had not conducted oversight on 92 revenue-generating agencies.

Akpabio expressed frustration over the continued disregard by heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies for invitations from the National Assembly.

He warned that the Senate would not hesitate to reshuffle committee chairmen who fail to meet the Senate’s expectations.

He said, “If, for any reason, some committees are finding it too difficult to conduct oversight on their agencies, we will change the composition of the committees so that those with the capacity and capability can take over and perform their duties for the benefit of democracy in this country.”

The Senate President also directed all standing committee chairmen to submit reports on their oversight activities by January 31, 2025, to assess their progress and identify challenges.

Highlighting the Senate’s constitutional powers, Akpabio warned MDAs against resisting invitations, reminding them that lawmakers have the authority to issue arrest warrants.

He added, “The Constitution backs us. I do not see where any MDA or agency will refuse to comply with an invitation or demands from any Senate or National Assembly committee.

“When committees overlook such defiance, it becomes a norm. Let us take this matter seriously.”

The Senate has over 70 standing committees, each responsible for oversight functions in line with its Standing Orders.
