Sporting Lisbon Sack Amorim’s Replacement After Just Eight Matches

Joao Pereira, who replaced Ruben Amorim at Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon have been sacked after just eight games in charge.

Sporting Lisbon confirmed Pereira’s sacking on their X handle on Thursday.

“A Lion forever.

“Thank you Joao Pereira.”

Pereira was promoted from his role as Sporting Lisbon’s B team boss when Amorim left to take over at Manchester United.

Amorim took his entire backroom staff with him to Old Trafford and tipped Pereira for the top job.

But Pereira, a former Portugal international, has won just three games since his promotion.

Sporting had been top of the league table with an unbeaten record when Amorim left, but now find themselves a point behind leaders Benfica.

Their latest slip-up came on Sunday night when they were held to a goalless draw by mid-table Gil Vincente.

Despite Pereira only having been in charge for a month, Sporting chiefs have decided to act.

The club officials have been left unimpressed by a number of mistakes and took into account the protests launched by supporters following the draw at Gil Vincente.

Meanwhile, it has been a difficult start to life for Amorim at Old Trafford no thanks to some unimpressive results.

The Red Devils’ latest setback was a shock 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

The result came as a shock after United had beaten rivals Manchester City at the Etihad in their penultimate fixture.
