Scientific Excellence Vital For Poverty Reduction, Africa’s Prosperity

The federal government has said excellence in science would help to address Africa’s poverty crisis leading to prosperity.

The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, said science has the solution to addressing challenges facing the Africa continent.

He stated this on Tuesday at the opening of the 15th General Assembly and Scientific Conference of the African Academy of Sciences, in Abuja.

Nnaji said the event was a historic moment, being the first time the event has been hosted in West Africa, highlighting Nigeria’s growing role in advancing science and technology across the continent.

In his keynote address, he emphasized the crucial role of science and technology in tackling Africa’s pressing challenges.

Chief Nnaji stressed that the event’s theme, ‘Empowering and Advancing Africa’s Scientific Enterprise’, aligned perfectly with President Bola Tinubu’s 8-Point Agenda to revitalize the economy, create jobs, and foster innovation.

“This gathering brought together Africa’s brightest minds, scientists, policymakers, and thought leaders, to address economic transformation, food security, climate change, and public health.

“This is a powerful demonstration of what we can achieve when we prioritize science and innovation for Africa’s sustainable development.

‘As scientific excellence is vital for sustainable growth, poverty reduction, and a prosperous future for all Africans, it is imperative to reaffirm Nigeria’s dedication to strengthening the scientific foundations of our continent,” he said.

The Minister of Science and Technology assured that the government is committed to investing in research and innovation, improving education, and partnering with the private sector to commercialize research.

According to him, hosting this conference showcased “Nigeria’s leadership in driving innovation and progress across Africa”.

He added that he was confident that the insights and partnerships from the assembly would have a lasting impact on Africa’s scientific landscape, solidifying commitments to a brighter, more innovative future.
