Policemen, Others Injured As Violence Erupts In Osun Community

Violence has erupted in Esa-Oke town, in Obokun local government area of Osun State on Monday when youths in the ancient town allegedly resisted an attempt to install a monarch for a community in their domain.

It was gathered that crisis erupted when some people from a quarters in Ilesa were allegedly trying to install a monarch over Ido-Ayegunle, a community the Esa-Oke people claimed to be under their domain.

No fewer than 10 people, including law enforcement agents, were injured in the melee that ensued in which dangerous weapons were used. Sporadic gunshots also rented the air in the town.

Meanwhile, the Owamiran of Esa-Oke, Oba Adeyemi Adediran, has called for calm and pleaded for assistance from security operatives for their immediate intervention.

Also, the Osun State Police Command disclosed that its men have been deployed to the troubled town to maintain peace and tranquility.

Speaking with our correspondent in Osogbo, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mrs Yemisi Opalola, disclosed that no fewer than seven policemen deployed to the community sustained various degree of injuries.

She, however, gave assurance that the Police will make further effort to ensure that peace returned to the community soonest.

A resident, Bola Adeyemi, while speaking with LEADERSHIP on telephone, said residents were in panic as businesses remained paralysed and residents remained indoors for fear of attack.
