Police Shoot Former Council Chairman In Bauchi

A former chairman of the Ningi local government in Bauchi State, Danlami Alhassan, was reportedly assaulted and shot by a police officer affiliated with the 12th Zonal Headquarters of the Nigeria Police in Bauchi.

Henzodaily understands that the event took place near the construction site of a flyover in the Wunti area of Bauchi City.

Narrating the development, Alhassan, according to Leadership, described how he was approached by a motorcyclist, later identified as a police officer, who attempted to stop him without any valid reason.

He stated that he did not comply, as he was unfamiliar with the motorcyclist, and the officer discharged a weapon, striking him on the head with a teargas canister, which resulted in severe injuries and ignited a fire within his vehicle.

He recounted that the police officer initially signalled for him to halt, but he continued driving, concerned for his safety. When he finally reduced his speed in a more populated area, the officer obstructed his vehicle and fired at him, causing blood to flow from his head.

Residents, recognizing Alhassan, assisted in extinguishing the flames in his car.

In his rush to flee, the police officer left behind a bag containing items later confirmed to belong to a police officer, including a cold-weather jacket, teargas canisters, and an identification card. This evidence was subsequently taken to the GRA Police Station in Bauchi.

After the incident, Alhassan received treatment at the Teaching Hospital and was discharged once his condition stabilized. He expressed his frustration and urged police authorities to investigate the unprovoked assault and ensure that justice is achieved.

The individual reported that his vehicle, which was entirely consumed by fire on the inside, is currently held at the police station as evidence. Alhassan emphasized his lack of knowledge regarding the motive behind the attack and called for a comprehensive investigation to bring the responsible party to justice.

Thomas Goni, the zonal police public relations officer (ZPPRO), verified the occurrence and reassured the public that the situation was being treated with utmost seriousness.

He recognized that the event had caused significant concern within the community and pledged to conduct a thorough and unbiased inquiry.

Goni also confirmed that the officer implicated has been identified and will be subjected to disciplinary measures in accordance with police regulations.

Additionally, Goni stated that the Nigeria Police Force is dedicated to maintaining its standards and principles, highlighting the importance of accountability.

He assured the public that there are ongoing initiatives to reassess police training programs and protocols to avert similar incidents in the future.

This commitment, he noted, is intended to ensure that officers manage situations with professionalism and respect and in alignment with the expectations of the communities they serve.
