Onuachu Begged To Join Southampton – Genk Chief De Conde

Genk sporting director Dimitri De Conde has explained the circumstances leading to Paul Onuachu’s departure from the club.

Onuachu left the Smurfs for Premier League club, Southampton in January 2023.

“Paul was 28 years old, and he absolutely wanted to leave because it was the chance of a lifetime, for a contract that would not come back a second time,” Conde told RTBF.

“He begged me in tears to let him go… and in these cases, we no longer talk about money or the interest of the club! We will never block a deal: we always prioritize the human and the choice of the player.”

Genk faltered in the title race after Conde’s departure with the fans expressing their displeasure with striker’s departure.

De Conde however said he acted in Onuachu ‘s best interest.

“People always talk to me about Onuachu, but we have to put it in the context of the time,” Conde added.

“We were in a title race, yes, but Paul was at a crucial stage in his career. This was a major step up for him, a chance to play in one of the biggest leagues in the world.”
