The PUNCH: Amid the hardship and recent stampedes across the country, funseekers in their numbers thronged fun places in the Federal Capital Territory, Lagos and Port Harcourt on Wednesday to celebrate Christmas, The PUNCH reports. There were stampedes in Ibadan, Abuja and Okija, where a total of 67 people, including 35 children, died in their rush for palliatives. In Okija, Anambra State, what was meant to be a Christmas palliative distribution on Saturday turned tragic when 22 persons lost their lives, with several others injured, during an early morning stampede.
The Nation: The proposed Value Added Tax (VAT) model will guarantee more income for states in the North and a reduction for Lagos and Rivers, according to data on the plan. Adjustment in the sharing formula of the VAT is part of the four Tax Reform Bills before the National Assembly.
Daily Trust: A military airstrike hit two villages in Sokoto on Wednesday and claimed the lives of 10 civilians, locals and community leaders said. Residents said the incident, which occurred around 7am at Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities in Silame Local Government Area, also left many other people injured.
