NASMED Marks 30 Years, Charts New Course To Safeguard Nigerian Athletes’ Careers

Concerned by the rising cases of career-ending injuries among Nigerian athletes, the Nigeria Association of Sports Medicine (NASMED) has unveiled plans to revolutionise sports medicine in the country to safeguard the careers of athletes, Completesports.com reports.

Marking its 30th anniversary with a symposium themed “Charting a New Path for Sports Medicine in Nigeria” in Abuja, NASMED highlighted its journey from inception to becoming a leading professional body.

Founded to provide an independent platform for sports medicine practitioners, the association has grown into a multidisciplinary powerhouse, uniting experts ranging from sports physicians to psychologists.

In his address, NASMED President, Dr Olajide Adebola, revealed plans to collaborate with relevant bodies to establish a comprehensive sports ecosystem in Nigeria.

“As an association, we are committed to working collaboratively with relevant bodies to create a robust sports ecosystem. This includes integrating sports physiotherapy, psychology, nutrition, and other key disciplines to foster the development of more professionals in these fields. Without such efforts, Nigeria will continue to face a shortage of skilled personnel in sports medicine,” Adebola said.

He emphasised the importance of addressing the needs of two categories of athletes: elite athletes competing for fame and podium finishes, and recreational athletes using fitness and wellness centres.

Similarly, the President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Engr Habu Gumel, pledged support for NASMED’s initiatives, recognising their significance in promoting athlete welfare and sports development across Nigeria.

“What we are doing here is truly significant, and it is vital to promote this effort across Nigeria. As the President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, I am committed to ensuring that both Olympic and non-Olympic sports receive the attention they deserve,” Gumel stated.

“This seminar is especially important because it raises awareness about the work of NASMED and its impact nationwide. I lend my full support and assure you that the NOC will continue to back NASMED as it grows and strengthens its capacity to support athletes, foster the learning movement, and contribute to the development of the country as a whole.”
