Germany President To Arrive Nigeria Today, Meet Tinubu, Soyinka

Germany’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is set to begin a three-day official visit to Nigeria today, which will run until December 12, 2024.

The German Embassy in Abuja announced the visit in a press release on Monday, highlighting key engagements during the President’s stay.

In Abuja, Steinmeier will hold discussions with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and the President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Dr. Alieu Touray.

These meetings are expected to strengthen bilateral ties between Germany and Nigeria.

Following his engagements in Abuja, the German President will travel to Lagos. There, he will connect with business leaders, visit a start-up hub, and interact with prominent cultural and civil society figures, including renowned artist Dr. Nike Okundaye and Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka.

His visit will also include a tour of Lagos, providing an opportunity to explore the city’s urban development challenges and opportunities.

President Steinmeier will be accompanied by a delegation of German business executives from sectors such as IT, high-tech, and energy, reflecting Germany’s growing interest in investing in Nigeria.

The statement noted, “The President of the Federal Republic of Germany, His Excellency Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, is set to arrive in Nigeria tomorrow, 10 December. He will stay until the 12th of December 2024.

“While in Abuja, President Steinmeier will meet with the President of Nigeria, His Excellency Bola Tinubu as well as with the President of the Commission of Economic Community of West African States, His Excellency Dr. Alieu Touray.

“The German President will then proceed to Lagos, where he will engage with business representatives, visit a start-up hub and meet with members of Nigeria’s culture sector and civil society, like Dr. Nike Okundaye, popularly known as Mama Nike of the Nike Art Gallery and the legendary author and Nobel laureate for Literature, Prof. Wole Soyinka.

“There will also be an opportunity to tour the city of Lagos and gain insights into the urban development of a megacity, including environmental and social challenges.

“President Steinmeier will be accompanied by a business delegation of CEOs and high-ranking board members of some of Germany’s most successful companies in the fields of IT, high-tech and energy – an indication of the rising interest of German businesses in opportunities to invest in Nigeria.”
