Arsenal Maintain Pressure On Liverpool After 3-1 Win Vs Brentford

Arsenal came from a goal down to defeat Brentford 3-1 in their first game of the New Year on Wednesday.

The Gunners, on 39 points, cut Liverpool’s lead at the top to six points.

Despite going behind thanks to Bryan Mbeumo’s opener, Mikel Arteta’s men responded with goals from Gabriel Jesus, Mikel Merino and Gabriel Martinelli.

Mbeumo opened the scoring in the 13th minute. The Cameroonian international received a pass from the midfield after Martin Odegaard gave the ball away, raced into Arsenal’s box, cut to his left foot and drilled a low shot past David Raya.

In the 29th minute Arsenal equalised through Jesus who was quickest to react, nodding into the net after the keeper had stopped Thomas Partey’s initial shot.

Arsenal then netted two quick goals early in the second half off Merino and Martinelli.

Merino put Arsenal 2-1 ahead in the 50th minute, volleying home after the Brentford defence failed to properly clear a corner kick.

Just three minutes later, Martinelli made it 3-1 with a right foot shot inside the box after Ethan Nwaneri’s cross was not well cleared.
