Even if you’re not American or don’t live in the US, you have probably heard of Powerball, a game that has changed the lives of many. This American multi-state lottery is a game that offers a chance for life-changing winnings, which we can only dream about — and many do!
With its blend of simplicity and astronomical odds, Powerball has become more than just a game: it gives people hope for a better tomorrow.
I, too, have been enticed by Powerball, and I enjoy playing it weekly. Though I haven’t been lucky enough to win the jackpot yet, I’ve won small sums that have paid for my coffee… and sometimes a pair of new sneakers.
But how does Powerball work, and how can you start playing? I’ll dive into the world of Powerball and let you in on some tricks that you’ll find useful when playing Powerball.
Powerball – a long-time favourite
Powerball has been around for a good bit now. Its story began in 1992 when a group of state lotteries were brought together to create a game with bigger prizes. Back then, it started as a modest venture. It has since grown into a colossal enterprise spanning 45 states, including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.
In 2001, the Power Play multiplier was introduced to the game, which allows players to boost their non-jackpot winnings for a small extra fee. Adding that little extra fee brings more excitement into the game.
Another game-changing shift occurred in 2015 when Powerball altered its number format, introducing the possibility for bigger and better jackpots.
In August 2021, Monday drawings were added to the schedule, so players can participate in this game three days a week.
How does Powerball work? Is it easy to play?
Powerball is a refreshingly straightforward game that can be played online and at physical locations. Players can pick five white balls from a pool of 69 and one red Powerball from a separate pool of 26.
Buying a Powerball ticket is easy, and you don’t have to spend much money on it. A standard play costs only $2, with the option to add the Power Play multiplier for an extra dollar. You can choose your numbers or do a Quick Pick, where the computer chooses the numbers. I don’t use Quick Pick, as I prefer to pick my numbers and choose my fate, so to speak.
Powerball players eagerly sit at the screen watching the live draw streamed from the Florida Lottery draw studio in Tallahassee every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday night.
Winning combinations and prizes
Powerball offers multiple ways to win, with prize tiers based on the number of correctly matched balls.
I broke down the winning combinations below to make them as easily understood as possible.

Prize tiers in Powerball
There are some different ways to win in Powerball, and each combination has a different payout.
Remember that even if you don’t win the jackpot, which is pretty rare anyway, you’ll still have a ton of chances to win other prizes. Personally, I’ll even take a $7 or $4 win over nothing as it pays for a coffee and maybe a scone!
Jackpot (5 white balls + Powerball)
The jackpot is won by matching all five white balls in any order, plus the red Powerball. This prize starts at $20m and increases when no one wins, sometimes reaching astronomical amounts. The largest Powerball jackpot to date was $2.04bn in November 2022.
Second prize (5 white balls)
Players who match all five white balls but miss the Powerball win $1m. This is a pretty life-changing amount, even if it doesn’t compare to the jackpot sum.
Third prize (4 white balls + Powerball)
Matching four white balls and the Powerball nets players $50,000.
Fourth and fifth prizes (4 white balls or 3 white balls + Powerball)
Both these combinations result in a $100 prize. It’s somewhat interesting to note that matching fewer white balls but including the Powerball can award the same prize as matching more white balls without the Powerball.
Sixth and seventh prizes (3 white balls or 2 white balls + Powerball)
Both these combinations result in a $7 prize. As before, the Powerball can compensate for fewer matched white balls.
Eighth and ninth prizes (1 white ball + Powerball or Powerball only)
The lowest tier prize is $4 and is awarded for matching just the Powerball or the Powerball plus one white ball. Even though these prizes are small, they keep players engaged. I have won a few four-dollar tickets and am always happy to win.
Powerball is a numbers game, so learn the odds
The chance of hitting the jackpot by matching all five white balls plus the Powerball is 1 in 292,201,338. In other words, it is very unlikely as established earlier. To put this in perspective, you’re more likely to become a movie star or get struck by lightning than win the big prize.
Matching just the Powerball nets you $4, with odds of 1 in 38. The second-highest prize of $1m for matching all five white balls without the Powerball has odds of 1 in 11,688,053.
The Power Play multiplier adds another layer of excitement. For an extra buck, non-jackpot prizes can be multiplied by two, three, four, five or even 10 times their original value, depending on the multiplier drawn.
What happens when you win Powerball?
Let’s say that you’ve won big playing Powerball. What do you do next?
If you have a physical ticket in your hand, your first stop should be your state lottery website. Each state has its own rules and processes for claiming prizes, so it’s crucial to check what applies to you.
If you’ve played Powerball online at an online gaming site and won a smaller prize of up to $600 or so, the gaming platform will pay you your winnings instantly.
What to do when the big bucks come in?
For those life-changing wins, if you played Powerball online at Jackpocket, they’ll securely transfer the winning ticket to you, complete with email receipts and ticket images. It’s like getting the keys to a treasure chest, but in this case, the treasure is very, very real.
Once you have your winning ticket, you’re all set to claim your prize directly from the state lottery.
Should the win be taken as a lump sum or annuity?
If you happen to win a huge sum at Powerball, you can choose one of two options: you can grab your winnings as a lump sum or as an annuity.
The lump sum is the “I want it all, and I want it now” option. You get one big cash payment upfront, though it’s typically less than the total jackpot amount.
An annuity provides you with payments towards the total jackpot amount over several years. Think of this as the “slow and steady” approach. It might not give you that instant millionaire feeling, but it could be more beneficial in the long run.
Each option has its perks, and the best choice depends on your personal financial situation and goals. It’s like choosing between a sprint and a marathon.
Which Powerball myths should you not believe?
Many people in the iGaming world are superstitious, and I must admit that I am too.
Powerball has spawned numerous myths and misconceptions despite its random nature. The idea of “hot” and “cold” numbers — those that appear frequently or rarely — is a common fallacy that’s not exclusive to Powerball. Each draw is an independent event, and past results have no bearing on future outcomes.
Also, the notion of “lucky” stores or locations is unfounded. While some retailers may sell more winning tickets, this is typically due to higher sales volumes rather than any inherent luck. It’s important to remember that you’ll have the same odds of winning no matter where you buy your ticket.
Perhaps the most dangerous myth is the existence of guaranteed winning systems or strategies. No system can predict or influence the outcome of a truly random draw. These misconceptions often stem from the mistaken belief that past events can influence future outcomes in random processes.
Powerball is more than just a game
Powerball’s appeal lies not just in its massive jackpots but in the shared experience it offers. It’s a communal daydream or a collective “what if” that spans the nation. Admit it. You probably asked a friend, “What would you do if you won the jackpot?”
You might have some ideas for yourself too. I would travel around the world, for starters.
For many players, buying a ticket is less about the expectation of winning and more about purchasing a few days of hope and excitement.
Like any gambling, it is important to set strict budget limits, play for entertainment rather than as a financial strategy and never spend more than you can afford to lose.
