Premier League Referee Sacked Over Misconduct

David Coote was sacked as a Premier League referee earlier today, December 9, following an investigation into allegations regarding his behavior.

Coote, who is 42 years old, was initially suspended by the PGMOL on November 11, 2024, as the organization commenced a full inquiry into his actions.

The suspension was prompted by the circulation of a video on social media that reportedly showed Coote making derogatory remarks about Liverpool Football Club and their former manager, Jurgen Klopp. The video raised significant concerns about his suitability to officiate matches at the highest level.

The situation escalated further when, just two days later, the tabloid newspaper, The Sun, published photographs that allegedly depicted Coote engaging in suspicious activity during this summer’s European Championship.

These images purportedly show him inhaling a white powder through a rolled-up US dollar bill, raising serious questions about his professionalism and personal conduct.

In light of these incidents, the PGMOL concluded that Coote’s actions rendered his position “untenable.” The refereeing body stated, “David Coote’s actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract.”

Despite this outcome, the PGMOL also emphasized their ongoing support for Coote, indicating, “Supporting David Coote continues to be important to us and we remain committed to his welfare.”

David Coote has been informed of his right to appeal the decision regarding his termination, allowing him the opportunity to contest the findings and the subsequent result of the investigation.
