Don’t abuse purpose of Valentine’s Day – Legal Practitioner warns youth

A Legal Practitioner in Ile-Ife, Osun, Mr Philip Fasanmoye, has admonished youths against immoral acts as they celebrate the 2025 Valentines’ Day.

Fasanmoye gave the advice during an interview to commemorate this year’s Valentine Day, on Friday, in Ile-Ife.

He explained that Valentine means a day of celebration, a day to show kindness to everybody, a day to show love irrespective of any person or gender.

According to him, it is a day we should be happy, a day to visit motherless babies homes  and to show kindness to the aged, young, youth, male and female as well as the sick and physically challenged.

He condemned youths of nowadays that are abusing the valentine day, saying that they used the day to make frivolous and immoral requests from their lovers.

“Valentine is not necessarily to visit the opposite gender. A spouse can visit recreational centres and motherless babies home and exchange gifts.

“Celebrating valentine doesn’t warrant smoking or taking Indian hemp, for that’s not the purpose of valentine,” Fasanmoye maintained.

He urged them not to abuse the purpose of valentine day to ruin their brighter future.

Every Feb. 14 is set aside to commemorate Valentines Day where people express love to one another through gifts of flowers, chocolates, and heartfelt messages.

Its roots date back to both Christian and ancient Roman traditions.

A legend speaks of St Valentine, a priest, who blessed secret marriages against the wishes of the Roman Emperor Claudius 11. He was martyred for his defiance.

But time has evolved the day into a celebration of all forms of love including platonic and romantic.
