West Ham United striker, Michail Antonio, has undergone surgery to address a lower limb fracture sustained during a car accident on Saturday.
The club released an official statement confirming the procedure. It announced that Antonio will remain under close observation in the hospital over the next few days as he begins his recovery.
The incident occurred in the Epping Forest District of Essex, England, where the 34-year-old Jamaica international was involved in a serious crash that required emergency services to extract him from his vehicle.
Following the accident, he was promptly transported to a central London hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition, conscious, and able to communicate effectively with staff.
West Ham United, noting Antonio’s significance as the club’s all-time leading scorer in the Premier League with an impressive tally of 68 goals in 268 league matches, expressed their concern for his well-being.
The club’s statement extended a heartfelt thank you to the emergency responders who provided immediate care at the scene. They highlighted the overwhelming support the football community has shown since news of the accident broke.
“We wish Michail a swift and smooth recovery,” the statement added.
The Essex County Fire and Rescue Service reported that they received calls about the accident around 13:02 GMT on Saturday and promptly dispatched teams to the scene.
By 13:45 GMT, they had successfully freed Antonio from his vehicle. While details regarding the extent of his injuries were initially withheld, it was made clear that Essex Police have launched an investigation into the serious nature of the crash, which involved a Ferrari. Authorities are appealing for witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage of the incident to come forward.
