The 2024 Nigeria Armwrestling Open Championship has been confirmed for December 19 at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
A statement issued by Engineer Samuel Jackson, President of the Nigeria Armwrestling Federation, explained that the event is organized in collaboration with the Nigeria Olympic Committee.
In a heartfelt addition to the event’s purpose, Jackson revealed that the championship is dedicated to the memory of Mr. Dapo Sotuminu, the late Media Director of the federation.
“We are dedicating this championship to celebrate the life and contributions of Mr. Dapo Sotuminu, whose efforts greatly shaped the visibility of armwrestling in Nigeria,” Jackson stated.
“This year’s tournament also aims to honor all athletes and stakeholders who have supported the growth of armwrestling in Nigeria.
“We are using this championship as a celebration of everyone involved in this sport—athletes, officials, and fans alike,” Jackson added.
The Open Championship is a significant platform for promoting armwrestling, nurturing talent, and uniting enthusiasts from across the nation.
With top-tier competitors expected, the event is a step toward integrating armwrestling further into national and international sports frameworks.
Jackson emphasized the tournament’s alignment with the federation’s broader mission of promoting sportsmanship and advancing Nigeria’s standing in global armwrestling events.
“This event not only commemorates Mr. Sotuminu’s legacy but also solidifies our resolve to grow the sport and foster unity through it,” he said.
