Elder brother of 1990 coup leader, late Gideon Orkar is dead

The elder brother of Major Gideon Orkar, who spearheaded the failed coup against the regime of Gen. Ibrahim Babangida in 1990, Prof. Joseph Orkar, has died.

Former Benue State commissioner had passed away on Sunday, January 5.

In a condolence message, Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia described the late Professor as a great community leader, father, and builder of many.

He further acknowledged Prof. Orkar’s far-reaching influence as a politician and public servant, which extended well beyond his family and professional spheres.

Governor Alia said: “As a former councillor representing the Ugondo/Mbasambo council ward of the Gwer Local Government in 1978; a member of the Benue State House of Assembly representing the Yonov District Constituency of Makurdi Local Government in 1979; and as Commissioner for Works and Transport under the Governor Aper Aku administration, Prof. Orkar displayed excellence, knowledge, wisdom, guidance, and mentorship that have shaped generations and inspired them to strive for greatness.”

In a statement released by his media aide, Tersoo Kula, the governor highlighted that Prof. Orkar, as the first professor of Zwa Tiv, would be remembered for his significant contributions to Tiv literature, including his authorship of several notable books in the Tiv language.

The governor prayed for God’s comfort upon Prof. Orkar’s immediate family, the people of Makurdi Local Government, and the entire Benue State.
